Menopause Blog Series on The Change by Germaine Greer 1 of 3

Let’s be honest: the first time someone said the word “menopause” to me in a serious tone, I checked to make sure I hadn’t wandered into a pharmaceutical ad. You know the ones—soft-focus lighting, a sad woman watching leaves fall while ominous piano music plays.

So imagine my delight when I cracked open The Change by Germaine Greer and found not a whisper of apology, but a full-on menopausal mic drop.

Greer doesn’t just talk about menopause—she rips off the societal shame shawl and waves it like a victory flag.

Her message- "Midlife isn't the end of anything"

Midlife isn’t the end of anything. It’s the beginning of finally being done with trying to please everyone but yourself.

She calls out the cult of youth, the absurdity of trying to Botox our way back to 29, and the way we treat menopause like a problem instead of what it is:

A portal. Not to invisibility, but to freedom

And that got me thinking.

What if we stopped talking about menopause like a malfunction and started treating it like a milestone?

What if, instead of shrinking into the background, we expanded into who we were always meant to be?

The Change is part feminist rant, part biological breakdown, and part spiritual pep talk. It’s also one long permission slip.

Permission to:

  • Stop smoothing your edges

  • Reclaim your no’s

  • Live with unapologetic appetite

Is it blunt? Oh yes. It’s Germaine Greer. But it’s also bold and oddly comforting to be reminded that maybe, just maybe, the next chapter of your life doesn’t require reinvention.

Just reclamation.

Menopause isn’t a failure of youth. It’s the freedom from it. And honestly? I’ve never felt more alive.

Love the vibe I'm dropping? Share this with a friend who understands what it is like to feel helpless against this whole menopause and aging thang. xo

Stay tuned next week for PART 2 of this series on the book THE CHANGE by Germaine Greer.
